Bonjour… Ah oui, vous êtes français ! J’ai travaillé avec un réalisateur français récemment : Fabien Martorell dans un film nommé “Unbelief”. C’est un court-métrage d’environ 15 minutes. Nous avons tourné à Los Angeles. C’était une bonne experience. Aussi, je serais dans 3 fims bientôt : "Dark House", "Manson Family Vacation" et "Phantom Halo". 1/ Hello M. Bell, I’m Sylvain for the french blog : « The last blog on the left ».

Hello, oh yes, you are French! I worked with a French director recently: Fabien Martorell in a movie called “Unbelief”. It’s short movie, approximately 15 minutes. We have shoot in Los Angeles. 2/ D’accord. Quand avez-vous decidé de lancer votre carrière d’acteur ?

Lors de ma dernière année de lycée, j’ai décidé de devenir acteur. J’ai assisté à une conférence de Hume Cronyn et Jessica Tandy, deux célèbres acteurs américains des années 60-70. Je les ai écouté parler et cela m’a inspiré. J’avais prévu de devenir journaliste mais j’ai changé d’avis. J’ai quitté l’école et je suis allé à New York pour étudier la comédie. Ensuite, Alan Parker, un réalisateur anglais, m’a engagé pour « Mississipi Burning ». Mon premier rôle dans un film de Major. Un film très très important avec des personnes de qualité qui jouaient dedans : Gene Hackman, Willem Dafoe…

2/ Ok.! When did you decide to launch your career’s actor?

The last year on my college, I decided to be an actor. I attended a conference of Hume Cronyn & Jessica Tandy, two famous Americans actors in the 60’s, 70’s. I’m listened to them speaking and I was inspired. I was planning to be a journalist and I changed my mind. I went out of school and I went to New York City and I studied comedy. Then, Alan Parker, a british director, hire me in “Mississipi Burning”.My first role in a major movie. A very very important movie with high quality people in it: Gene Hackman, Willem Dafoe…

3/ Parlons de “Saw”, comment avez-vous obtenu le rôle de John Kramer ?

La directrice de casting de « Saw 1 » connaissait mon travail et m’a appelé pour rencontrer James Wan. Il m’a engagé pour jouer l’homme au sol, dans le sang. Personne, à ce moment là, ne savait qu’il y aurait sept de ces films. Personne ne savait ça. Une de mes motivations était de travailler avec Danny Glover. Je n’avais jamais tourné avec Danny Glover. Et aussi la fin était vraiment surprenante et bien faite. James Wan a très bien réalisé ce moment, il voulait vraiment que ce soit un moment spécial du film. Toutefois, c’était long. Il a fallut que je reste trois semaines comme cela, au sol, pour enfin arriver à ce moment !

3/ Talking about “Saw”, how did you get the role of John Kramer?

The Casting director for “Saw 1” knew my work and she called me to see James Wan. He hired me to play the man on the floor in the blood. None of us knew that there would be seven of these movies. Nobody knew that. One of my motivation was I wanted to work with Danny Glover. I had never worked with Danny Glover. And also the ending was very surprising and well done. James Wan shot that moment very well. And he would be a special moment. However long, I needed to live there which was all about 3 weeks in order to get to that moment.

4/ “Saw” a obtenu un énorme succès. Quelle a été votre réaction ?

Pour être honnête, je n’avais jamais pensé à tout cela. Une fois que j’ai eu fini le travail sur « Saw », je suis passé à un autre projet. J’étais en République tchèque quand le film a été diffusé. Je travaillais sur une série Télé pour NBC et je ne pensais plus du tout à « Saw ». Mais, oui, bien sûr, j’étais content. Le film a été bien reçu et quand j’ai entendu cela, je me suis dit que c’était bon mais je ne pensais pas à en faire d’autres.

4/ “Saw” obtain a surprising success. What was your reaction?

To be honest with you, I wasn’t even thinking about it. Once I finished the job, I was in other project. I was in Czech Republic when the film was realized. I worked on a TV Series for NBC and I didn’t think about Saw. But, yes of course, I was happy. The film got a good reception. When I heard that, I say “Oh, that’s good” but I didn’t think about doing anymore.

5/ Dans le premier film, vous avez un petit mais important rôle. Etiez-vous heureux de développer votre personnage dans « Saw 2 » ?

Hum oui, cela ma donné une opportunité de développer certains aspects de ce qui était dans l’esprit du personnage, toutes ces choses qui le motivent à faire ce qu’il fait. C’était intéressant de développer cette philosophie de son comportement.

5/ In the first movie, you have a small but important role. Were you happy to develop your character in “Saw 2” ?

Hum yeah, it gives me an opportunity to develop some of what is on the mind of the character, what some of the things which motivated him to do what he did. It was interesting to develop the philosophy behind his behavior.

6/ A chaque film, vous en découvriez un petit plus…

Bien sûr, lorsque vous passez du temps avec le personnage, vous apprenez plus à propos de lui et c’est le partie la plus intéressante du travail. Vous savez, travailler avec d’autres acteurs comme Donnie Wahlberg et Shawnee Smith aide à en apprendre plus sur John Kramer.

6/ On each movie, you discovered a little more…

Of course, whenever you spend time with the character, you learn more about him and that’s the most interesting part. You know, working with others actors like Donnie Walhberg and Shawnee Smith help to learn more about John Kramer.

7/ Etiez-vous impatient de découvrir les nouveaux rebondissements ?

Cela m’intéressait mais je n’étais pas impatient. Si vous êtes impatient, vous êtes dans la précipitation. Je ne suis jamais dans la précipitation. Je suis un mec lent (rires). J’aime prendre le temps dans le processus, pas dans le résultat.

7/ Were you impatient to discover the new twists?

I was interested but I was not impatient. If you are impatient, you are in a hurry. I’m never in a hurry. I’m a slow guy (laugh). I like to spend time in the process, not in the results.

8/ Vous sentiez vous proche du personage de John Kramer ?

Oui, c’est mon travail. Je dois comprendre ses motivations. Si vous voulez me demander si je ferais ce qu’il fait : Non pas nécessairement mais c’est mon travail de rentrer à l’intérieur de sa peau, de me mettre de son côté et de comprendre d’où il vient et où il veut en venir. Alors, je travaille très dur pour faire cela.

8/ Did you feel close to the character of John Kramer?

Yes, it’s my job. I need to understand his motivations. If you asking me would I do what he does: No, not necessarily. But it's my job to get inside his skin and to beyond his side and understand where is coming from. So I worked very hard to do that.

10/ Oui… Vous souvenez-vous de tous les pièges ?

Hum, je ne sais pas si je me rappelle de tous les pièges mais je me souviens de la plupart d’entre eux. Le piège qui m’a intéressé le plus n’est pas un des plus célèbres. C’est un piège que l’on voit dans « Saw III ». Il y a un juge dans une cuve, un grand container et ils font tomber des cochons dans le container dans lequel se trouve le juge. J’ai trouvé que celui là était ridiculement dégoutant. Tous ces cochons dans le container autour du juge… J’aime aussi le piège de « la femme de glace » dans « Saw III ». La glace monte graduellement, lentement. C’était très créatif. Je suppose que j’aime quand c’est difficile à accomplir et la personne qui a fait cette effet special s’appelle François Degenais.

10/ Yes… Did you remember all of traps?

Hum, I don’t know if I remember all of the traps but I remember most of them. The trap which interesting me the most is not one of the most famous, it’s a trap in “Saw III”. There was a judge in a vat, a big container and they drop pigs into this container where the judge was. I found that one was ridiculously disgusting. All this pigs into the vat around the judge… I like too the Ice woman trap in Saw 3. Ice comes gradually, slowly. That was very creative. I guess I liked it when it’s difficult to accomplish and the special effect guy is François Degenais.

11/Comment était le tournage avec James Wan ?

James Wan a fait le premier film et c’était très bien de travailler avec lui, c’est toujours bien de travailler avec les créateurs, de travailler sur le matériau de base car James Wan et Leigh Whannel ont le cœur et l’esprit connectés sur les facteurs importants. Leigh jouait très bien et il était un des scénaristes. James et lui sont très proches lorsqu’ils travaillent ensemble. Le résultat de ce genre de collaboration est très bon. Par ailleurs, le moment final du film, dans « Saw 1 », quand je me lève du sol, ce moment est aussi efficace car Leigh Whannel est dans l’action. Sa réaction est fondamentale. James Wan et Leigh ont travaillé ensemble tous ces moments.

11/ How was the shoot with James Wan ?

James Wan done the first movie and it was very good to work with him, it’s always good to work with the creators, to work on the original material because Wan & Leigh Whannel have hearth and mind connected on important factors. Leigh was acting very well in the film and he was one of the writers and himself and James were very close to work together. Result of that kind of collaboration is very good. By the way, the final moment of the film, in “Saw 1”, when I get up on the floor, that moment is only as effective because Leigh Whannel is in action. His reaction is fundamental. James Wan and Leigh worked together on all of those moments.

12/ Avec les autres réalisateurs, c’était aussi de bonnes expériences ?

Oui, j’ai travaillé avec Darren Lynn Bousman sur Saw 2,3 et 4. Sur ces trois films, Darren a été génial. Il a réalisé de très très bons films. Il était ouvert aux suggestions et j’ai vraiment aimé ce que nous avons fait. Toutes ces idées, tout ce que nous avons partagé, tout cela. Et pour les autres films réalisés par David Hackl et Kevin Greutert, ces gars connaissaient « Saw ». David était le concepteur de production pour tous les films de la saga et Kevin était l’éditeur pour tous les films. Tout a été très réussi. La fierté pour les producteurs, pour les réalisateurs, pour Lionsgate est que les films sont populaires tout autour du monde. De toutes évidences, les créateurs du film, Leigh et James, l’équipe de production, Lionsgate savent qu’ils ont quelque chose dont le public veut toujours plus. Et pas qu’aux Etats-Unis. Les films sont populaires au Japan, en Europe, etc… Et c’est une très bonne chose.

12/ With the others directors, it was also good experiences?

Yes, I worked with Darren Lynn Bousman in Saw 2, 3 et 4. On these 3 films, Darren was great. He realized the films very very well. He was open to suggestions and I really loved the results. All the ideas, all that we shared, all of that. And for the last public films done by David Hackl and Kevin Greutert, those guys know “SAW”. David was a production designer for all of the Saw films and Kevin was the editor of all of the Saw films. It was all very successful. The pride for the producers, for the directors, for Lionsgate is that the films are popular all around the world. Obviously, The creators of the film, Leigh and James, the production team, Lionsgate knows that they had something that people always want to. It’s not just in US. It’s popular in Japan, in Europe etc… and that’s a very good thing.

13/ Si je vous dis que vous êtes le Jason ou le Freddy des années 2000, êtes-vous d’accord avec cela ?

Je ne sais pas parce que je ne suis pas très connaisseur avec l’histoire des films d’horreur mais vous savez, je veux faire mon travail du mieux possible. Je suis heureux d’être là et tous les acteurs veulent jouer ce genre de personnage. John Kramer a été un personnage merveilleux pour moi. Je serais vraiment très heureux d’être considéré au même niveau que des personnages aussi connus et réussis que Freddy et Jason.

13/ If I tell to you that you are the Jason or Freddy of the 2000’s years, are you agree with that ?

I don’t know because I am not very educated with history of horror films but you know I want do my work at the best. I’m happy to be there and all actors want to play these kinds of characters. John Kramer has been a marvelous character for me. I would be very happy to be considered at the same level as very successful characters like Freddy and Jason.

14/ Y’aura-t-il un nouveau film “Saw” ?

Je ne connais pas la réponse à cette question. Je n’ai pas parlé récemment avec aucune des personnes qui sont impliqués dans la saga « Saw ». Je n’ai pas d’informations à propos de films supplémentaires. Je ne sais pas mais si je trouve quelque chose de spécifique, j’en parlerai sur Twitter et Facebook. J’espère avoir plus d’informations, vous savez, tous les fans en voudraient un peu plus mais je pense que c’est très important que les films suivants soient de bonne qualité.

14/ Will there be a new “Saw” movie ?

I don’t know the answer of that question. I didn't speak with any people who was involved recently. I don’t have any information about anymore Saw films.I don’t know but if I find out something specific, I will speak about on twitter and facebook. I wish I have more information, you know all the fans would like a little bit more but I think it’s very important that they just want keep the following films first-rate.

15/ Vous avez joué dans un autre film d’horreur : « Buried Alive », quel souvenir gardez-vous de ce film ?

J’aime la caravane, mon personnage vit dans une caravane et j’ai aimé cela. Ils me l’ont donné pour vivre dedans. Les personnages avec qui j’ai travaillé étaient très bon. Nous avons tourné le film au Nouveau Mexique et nous étions dans les montagnes, il faisait très froid. J’aime mon personnage, c’était un mec fou et il effraie les jeunes gens. C’était un bon groupe de personnes.

15/ You played in another horror movie : “Buried Alive”. Which memory keeped you of this movie?

I like the trailer, my character lived in a trailer and I like that. They give me to live in. the people who I working with was very great and we shot this film in New Mexico and we were on the mountains and it was very cold, I like my character, he is a crazy guy and it scares young people. It was a good group of people.

16/ Quel est votre meilleur souvenir sur un tournage ?

Je dirais que les meilleurs moments pour moi, dans un film, sont quand j’ai travaillé avec Donnie Wahlberg dans « Saw II ». Avec Donnie et puis avec Shawnee Smith. Donnie jouait le détective et Shawnee jouait Amanda. J’aime tous les films, mais mes films avec Donnie et Shawnee, dans « Saw II » et « Saw III » ont été les meilleurs moments.

16/ What is your best moment in a movie, during a shoot ?

I would say the best moment for me, in a motion, is when I worked with Donnie Wahlberg in Saw II. with Donnie and with Shawnee Smith. Donnie plays detective and Shawnee plays Amanda. I love all of the films but the moments with Donnie and Amanda, in Saw 2 and Saw 3, were the best moments.
